You do not need to know everything before your first shift. You only need to arrive open, prepared, and ready to ask a question when you need to.
Choose a role that fits your real life.
Start with the time you actually have. A single event, an afternoon shift, or a role close to home is a great first step.
You are more likely to enjoy volunteering when the cause interests you and the commitment feels realistic.
Arrive a little early—and say hello.
Give yourself enough time to find the location, check in, and understand what the team needs. Ten minutes early is usually plenty.
Introduce yourself to the organizer. Let them know it is your first time if it is; most people are glad to help you get settled.
If plans change, communicate early.
Life happens. If you cannot make a shift, let the organization know as soon as you can. It helps them plan and makes it easier for another volunteer to step in.
Before you go
- Confirm the time, address, and role details
- Wear something comfortable and appropriate for the activity
- Bring water, any requested items, and a positive attitude
- Save the organizer’s contact details in case you are delayed
